Not all products are available in the shops. Since the credit crunch and the banking crash there are many people wary of large companies and would rather deal with people they know and trust when spending their hard earned cash. In addition, some companies offer a referral fee or a commission if you recommend produts you like to other people. Usually with this type of business which is called direct sales or referral marketing, you benefit from better prices, personal service or a combination of the two.

Usually you can buy products from anyone, but if you want to earn you need to find a distributor that is within travelling distance of you and preferably in your country. Make sure they have all the training too and have a track record of recruiting other distributors.
